11 Critical Lessons from the Book "How to Win Friends & Influence People" - Dale Carnegie
1. Talk in Their Language
When President Roosevelt expected a visitor, he studied what the visitor was interested in.
Pay special attention to the other person's interests so you can talk in their language.
When you talk in their language, you build a stronger relationship.
2. Remember Their Name
A person's name is the sweetest and most important sound in their language.
Remember:
- Their name
- Their name's correct spelling
An easy way to remember someone's name is by repeating it 3+ times or asking them to spell it out for you.
3. Be a Good Listener
The best conversationalists don't talk.
They listen.
If you want to be seen as interesting, you need to be interested in the other person.
Ask them questions and encourage them to talk about their accomplishments.
4. Praise Generously
People often live within their limits.
To push their limits and to push their success, inspire people with praise to help them reach their full potential.
Praise every improvement, no matter how small.
5. Show Genuine Interest in Others
The most frequently used word is the pronoun "I."
People are interested in themselves.
Remember their:
- Name
- Birthday
- Pet's name
You can make more friends by becoming interested in others vs. pushing others to become interested in you.
6. Ask Questions, Don't Give Orders
No one likes taking direct orders.
Instead of giving an order, offer advice:
- "You may consider this..."
- "Do you think this could work?"
- "What do you think about this?"
Make the other person feel like it's their own idea.
7. Acknowledge Your Mistakes
The fastest way to make people like, respect, and agree with you is to admit to your own mistakes.
To maintain strong relationships, you have to learn to take responsibility for your actions.
Acknowledge your mistake and genuinely apologize.
8. Avoid Arguments
Nothing you do or say is going to change someone's opinion.
Let it go.
You don't reach conclusions with arguments.
Instead, you both are left to believe your point of view more firmly.
"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still."
9. Smile
Smiling can have a profound and positive impact on others.
Smiling means you like the other person, which makes them feel happy to see you.
When you smile, you bring positive energy.
When you bring positive energy, you will meet success.
10. Never Tell Them They're Wrong
Don't call out mistakes directly.
Do this first:
- Praise them
- Show appreciation
- Talk about your own mistakes
- Indirectly call attention to mistakes
Always talk about your own mistakes first before pointing out someone else's mistakes.
11. The Details Matter
Pay attention to small details.
Remember:
- Anniversaries
- Their spouse's name
- Their favorite vacation spot
When you show that you remember the little things, you show that you care.
When you show that you care, your relationship will strengthen.
