Lessons from the Mahabharata - The war for Righteousness

The Mahabharata is a 2500 year old epic that is a tale for all times.

Roughly 7 times the length of Iliad and Odyssey combined and 15 times the length of the Christian Bible

It is a beacon that guides the human soul towards the path of Dharma (Righteousness and duty)

ॐ Krishna - Duty

Krishna tells Arjuna - Dharma is both rigid like a rock and pliable like wax.

It is not institutional religion.

It is natural, binding Duty.

It is ethical and inherited.

Dharma holds the Cosmos together.

Dharma is supreme. Dharma is law.

ॐ Duryodhana - Pride

Swa-Dharma (Desires for your own self) leads to A-Dharma (Unjust)

Duryodhana falls prey to his pride.

He indulges his greed till it overpowers him.

His tale tells us how blind pride and wrong actions have fatal consequences.

Be wary of your actions

ॐ Karna - Kindness

Karna, the god of giving.

Son of the Sun God.

He selflessly parts with his invincible Armor when asked for by a disguised Indra.

Not caring that it would bring him death.

His duty to give was above all.

Karna teaches us we never have nothing to give.

ॐ Draupadi - Femininity

The heroic princess with an unbending will - full of substance.

Extremely devoted to her husbands.

All five of them.

Womanly, compassionate and generous.

Equally fierce, will wreak havoc on her husbands enemies.

Her integrity dwarfs any modern woman

ॐ Shakuni - Revenge

A large portion of the deciet and conspiracy in this tale,

Stems from the mind of this man.

This war was a game to him.

His thirst for revenge disrupted the whole order of society.

Consumed an entire civilization.

ॐ Abhimanyu - Half knowledge

Brave, stood by what is right and fearless to take on the mighty.

He enters the death maze without knowing how to get out.

His half knowledge led to his doom.

His lessons in Dharma began right in the womb

Yet he fell to ignorance

ॐ Arjuna - Focus

Son of the king of gods.

His Guru Drona, impressed by his tenacity teaches him 'Dhanur Vidya'

The science of the bow and arrow.

With sheer will, focus and dedication he surpasses everyone at archery.

He only saw the eye of the bird he shot at - FOCUS

ॐ Yudhishthir - Hubris

A righteous soul, the eldest, wisest and kindest of our heroes

Values and virtues abundant for all to emulate.

Yet, in a fit of hubris he gambles away

His Kingdom, wealth, brothers and wife.

Righteousness is useless unless paired with foresight.

ॐ Dhritarashtra - Blind love

The old King, blind in both sight and sense.

Blind in his love for his son

Never saw the evil festering in his own flesh and blood

Failed as a king and as a father

Failed in his duty to guide them.

The Mahabharata is a monumental tale with infinite lessons.

It can be your spiritual awakening

The Bhagavad Gita is only a part of it

I suggest everyone to read.
